Best Logo Designs from the Kapiti Coast Contest

In March, the Kapiti Coast Council of New Zealand revealed a revamped logo, which according to local local newspaper, Kapiti Observer, "polarised" council opinion. At the time, it was reported the council had paid $NZD30,000 for the new brand including the logo.

The new Kapiti Coast Council logo was "mildy pornographic" acccording to one councillor. Others thought saw menance in the design, and likened it to the (mythical) Lock Ness monster. Read more about the reaction in the Kapiti Observer.

The new Kapiti Coast Council logo was expensive and not universally loved by locals. So we launched the Kapiti Coast logo design contest to promote our design community's awesome creativity, without the expensive price tag for the logo contest

The revamped Kapiti Coast Council logo

We took the Kapiti Coast Council brief and asked our designers to create a logo that captures the district and spirit of New Zealand. Read the Kapiti logo design brief here. The contest was reported by the Kapiti Observer.

We shortlisted the best designs and invited the public to vote via "DesignCrowd's facebook page. Over 250 votes later and the online logo design service that is DesignCrowd had landed on the contest's top three designs.

For $370 we received 141 designs from 66 designers from around the world including excellent submissions from seven New Zealand-based designers.

Kapiti Observer, 2nd April 2013: Winning Design Too Late for Kapiti Logo

Congratulations to Indian designer Omee who won the Kapiti Coast logo design contest. The contest results and Omee's winning design featured appeared on top Kiwi website Stuff.co.nz.

It has a feel of NZ, strength, New life, growth, good luck, prosperity, nature etc. I have seen lot of designs used trees, water, earth, sun elements to convey messages through the logo and I wanted to innovate something more powerful, said Omee.

Unfortunately it was too late for the council to consider Omee's design despite favorable comments about the logo from the Stuff.co.nz community. One person implored the council to reverse its decision and select Omee's design:

Much better looking than the one that has been approved. For the love of all things good taste, change your minds, Kapiti Council.
